The Road Less Traveled

The Road Less Traveled

I had a friend in college who loved to jump in the car and go on adventures. There was never a plan, we just always took “the road less traveled” to see what we could find as photography students. He also had a great sense of direction, so we never got lost. Even though these were short adventures that took only a few hours, I loved how care-free it felt in the moment.

College was a lifetime ago, and adventures seem less practical these days. An adventure may just be prayer over a life decision that will affect your family. Instead of feeling care-free, you might even get an ulcer stressing over a big decision. Adult life is stressful, it pushes us out of our comfort zone into the unknown. Knowing I’m a believer in Jesus for eternal life gives stability and assurance.

In Him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in Him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of His glory. Ephesians 1:13, 14 ESV

These are a couple of my most favorite verses. The simple truth of salvation and the GUARANTEE of assurance. There’s so much peace in these verses to me when I read them. We have confidence and assurance knowing we will reach our destination with Christ. But do you see the “big adventure” there? Don’t miss it! Look again.

“…until we acquire possession of it…”

In verse 14 Paul is reminding believers of their inheritance. We are not supposed to cruise along on auto-pilot until Jesus calls us home. The “road trip” is just as much about the destination as it is the journey. Paul goes on to say,

“…that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His great might that He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places…” Ephesians 1:17-20 ESV

The words that stick with me in these verses are WISDOM, KNOWLEDGE, ENLIGHTENED and then…THE RICHES OF HIS GLORIOUS INHERITANCE! As believers we will be His inheritance. Sounds crazy right?

So each day we decide to invest in the adventure of our inheritance/reward, or just muddle through another day without tapping into the power of the Holy Spirit. He’s our super power who enables us to live the adventure. We need Him because it’s hard. Life decisions, discipline, disappointment, loneliness, following Him instead of the world – we know the prize for staying the course, eternal reward, as well as hearing those precious words, “well done good and faithful servant.”  With the help of the Holy Spirit we choose to follow Him down paths that seem steep and scary, but lead to blessings and growth. Each time we do, we become a greater inheritance to our Father!

It’s worth it to follow Him down that path. Do hard things, make tough decisions, walk away from that thing that’s a stumbling block, put down that phone or tablet and invest in God’s inheritance. (Ouch!) As Paul reminds us in v. 20, our adventures on the hard path should be in gratitude for His sacrifice and love for us. So, dive into God’s word, lock arms with the Holy Spirit, and head down that road knowing the peace that is our final destination.
